I Paid a Stranger to Make My Ex Jealous, but Things Didn't Go as Planned – Story of the Day

I believed that taking a trip with an outsider to make my ex regret leaving was a foolproof plan. The idea sounded straightforward—pretend to be happy, catch his eye, and let everything unfold naturally. However, as the days passed, things didn’t go as I had imagined, and I started questioning my choices.

I might have done the most reckless thing in my life, but now there was no turning back. I stood at the airport, anxiously checking my phone every few moments, wondering if Travis was going to arrive. The situation seemed absurd.

A few days earlier, he was just a stranger at a local bar, someone I hardly knew. I remembered how casually he mentioned not having much money while I, filled with sorrow, poured out about Josh abandoning me.

Somehow, amid that chaotic conversation, the thought struck me—bold, impulsive, and maybe even clever.

"Hey," a voice broke my concentration. It was Travis.

"Hi," I replied, trying to look composed.

"So, do you still think this is a good idea?" he asked.

"I'm not sure," I admitted. "But maybe it could work. You?"

"No risks for me. I’m going away with a gorgeous woman, and I get paid for it," Travis said with a grin.

I felt my face flush. "If I looked better, he wouldn’t have dumped me."

"He’s just an idiot," Travis responded.

We cleared security and boarded the plane. That’s when I saw him—Josh. And, of course, his new girlfriend was right beside him. He looked surprised to see me.

"Ari? What are you doing here?" he asked.

I noticed Travis slip his arm around my waist. "Going on vacation with my boyfriend," I said, even though I could feel panic rising. I wanted Josh to feel jealous, but he seemed completely unfazed.

"Yeah, we just needed some time alone," Travis added smoothly.

“Oh, we’re doing the same—" Josh started, but Travis cut him off.

"Sorry, we need to find our seats," Travis said, guiding me away.

I was still stunned as we sat down and fastened our seat belts. Once settled, I managed to thank Travis. "I froze back there. Thanks for stepping in."

"That’s what I’m here for," he said with a playful smile.

As the plane lifted off, I looked out the window at the swirling clouds below and replayed everything in my mind.

The plan was simple—at least on paper. Make Josh jealous, make him regret losing me, and win him back.

I had planned every detail carefully, ensuring it looked natural. Travis and I were supposed to appear as a happy, carefree couple.

Even staying at the same hotel as Josh wasn’t a coincidence. Through mutual friends, I knew about his trip. All I had to do was play my part and make him notice.

When we arrived at the hotel, exhaustion hit me hard. I was ready to collapse into bed.

But that hope disappeared instantly when we opened the door and saw the room.

"There’s only one bed," I said flatly, disbelief clear in my voice.

"Yeah, I see that," Travis said, sounding too amused.

"This has to be a mistake. I booked a room with two beds!" I insisted, already reaching for my phone.

"Maybe there was an error," Travis suggested. "No big deal. We can share."

"Absolutely not," I shot back.

"What’s wrong? Afraid Josh will find out? Isn’t this what you wanted?" he teased.

"I don’t want to share a bed with someone I barely know," I said firmly.

"Why not? It’s just sleeping," he countered.

"Because it feels wrong… I’m not like that," I insisted.

"You're too strict," Travis said, shaking his head.

"And you’re too easygoing," I replied.

Without another word, I went to the front desk to clarify. But when I explained, the clerk told me there was no mistake.

"I specifically booked two beds," I argued.

"Is something wrong, Ari?" Josh’s voice suddenly interrupted, catching me off guard.

"No, no issues," I stammered.

"Well, we do have a—" the receptionist began.

"Everything’s perfect," I cut in. "The room is lovely. Very romantic. My boyfriend and I are very happy."

The receptionist looked confused but didn’t argue further.

"So…a boyfriend, huh?" Josh said with a smirk. "Didn't expect you to move on so fast."

"Well, you didn’t exactly come here alone," I responded.

"We’re different, anyway," he said.

"I decided to find someone who values me," I replied with a smile, then walked away.

Surprisingly, I felt a strange power growing inside. Last week, I’d pictured myself begging Josh to come back. Now? Not so much.

Back in our room, I told Travis we’d stay put and not ask questions.

We decided to call it an early night and climbed into separate beds, each keeping to our side. I stretched as far away from him as possible.

"So, you really are that kind of person," Travis said just as I was about to fall asleep.

At first, I didn’t get what he meant. Then it clicked, and I felt my cheeks heat up.

Without thinking, I grabbed a pillow and hit him with it, laughing despite myself.

“You’re impossible,” I mumbled, turning to face the wall.

Behind me, his laugh echoed loudly, carefree and without worry.

Somehow, it provided comfort. I fell asleep to the sound, a small smile on my lips.

The next few days flew by in a blur of carefully orchestrated encounters with Josh and his partner.

Travis and I played the pretend couple, appearing relaxed and happy — and surprisingly, it didn’t seem fake.

Travis made everything easier. He was funny, spontaneous, and knew how to make me forget what I was there for.

We spent afternoons building sandcastles, giggling as Travis claimed mine looked like a “lopsided pancake.”

We mimicked overly enthusiastic tour guides until tears ran down my face. And in the ocean, we splashed each other like children, laughter swallowed by the waves. Being with Travis, I felt a level of calm I hadn’t expected—peace.

One evening, after dinner, Travis suddenly stood up. “Let’s go,” he said, offering his hand.

"Where?" I asked, wary.

"Trust me," he replied, pulling me outside onto the beach.

“You know it’s not allowed for us to be here at night,” I whispered nervously.

“Oh, relax. What’s the worst that could happen?” he said before scooping me up and carrying me toward the water.

I screamed, laughed, and begged him to stop, but he kept going until we were both soaked. Even then, he held me close.

“You’re crazy,” I said, still laughing.

“And?” he asked, locking eyes with me.

For a moment, everything seemed to freeze. Our faces drew closer, but then reality hit hard. I backed away, mumbling something about Josh. As I walked back to the shore, I realized I thought about Josh less each day. Sitting on the sand, I felt conflicted.

"Why do you even want him back?" Travis asked, joining me.

"I love him," I replied.

"Do you?" he questioned, doubtful.

"We were together for a long time," I argued.

"But he didn’t treat you well. From what you said, he made you feel small," Travis said.

“That’s not true,” I defended.

“Maybe you just don’t realize it. I talked to him, you know. He doesn’t seem like a great person,” Travis added.

“You talked to him?” I yelled.

"He came to me, asking how serious we really were,” Travis explained. “But he doesn’t deserve you, Ari. He doesn’t see how amazing you are.”

"And how am I wonderful?" I asked, genuinely interested.

"You're smart, funny, beautiful—"

"Stop it," I interrupted, but he kept going.

"You scrunch your nose when you sip soda, you're adorable when you're angry, and you definitely snore."

"I don’t snore!" I said, lightly hitting him.

"You do. I’d bet on it," he teased. "You’re kind to everyone, even when they don’t deserve it. And I haven’t even mentioned how beautiful and intelligent you are."

I stared at him, my heart pounding. Suddenly, I kissed him—not like with Josh but better. Warmer. Genuine.

When I pulled back, Travis smiled. “Wow. Didn’t see that coming.”

I laughed and leaned into him. For the first time in a long while, I felt truly at ease.

The next morning, I was awakened by someone shaking me. It wasn’t Travis. I opened my eyes to find Josh standing over me.

“We need to talk,” he said.

Reluctantly, I followed him outside. “What’s wrong?” I asked.

“I can’t do this anymore, Ari. Seeing you with someone else… I still love you. I was stupid. Please, take me back,” he pleaded.

Before I could reply, he kissed me. But there was no fire, no rush—nothing. I pushed him away.

"No, Josh. I can't do this anymore," I said. "I have someone who sees me for who I am, and I can’t lose him."

“We can fix this,” he insisted.

"No," I said firmly. I looked around and saw Travis was gone. I felt a sinking feeling—he must have seen everything.

I ran through the hotel corridor, desperate to find him. Finally, I saw him leaving our room with his bag.

"Travis!" I called. He kept walking. "Please, wait!"

He paused but didn't turn around. "You got what you wanted. You don't need me now," he said coldly.

"No, you’re wrong. I don’t want him," I said, voice trembling. "I want you. You’re the only one who’s ever made me feel this way. I’m scared to lose you."

He looked at me, unreadable. "I told him no," I whispered.

He said nothing. My heart broke. "Please, Travis. Don’t leave."

After a moment, he set down his bag, stepped closer, cupped my face, and kissed me—like his life depended on it.

"Sharing a bed wasn’t such a bad idea," I whispered through tears.

"Best idea ever," he replied, smiling before kissing me again.
