We’ve lost the world’s oldest conjoined twins, Lori and George Schappell, who passed away at the age of 62 in their hometown of Pennsylvania.

A Life Together From the Start

Born on September 18, 1961, in Reading, Pennsylvania, Lori and George were conjoined at the skull yet led extraordinary lives with their separate bodies. They shared a part of their brain and essential blood vessels, a rare condition found in only 2% to 6% of conjoined twins. Their amazing life journey came to an end on April 7 in a Philadelphia hospital. The reason for their passing has not been shared with the public.

Overcoming Challenges Together

George faced his own challenges with spina bifida and used a mobility device to get around. Lori, ever supportive, would help by pushing and steering his wheeled stool. Their cooperation made every day movement possible, demonstrating their deep bond and interdependence.

Pioneers of Identity and Independence

In 2007, George became one of the first conjoined twins to transition, identifying as a male. This historical moment made the Schappells the first same-sex conjoined twins. During a memorable trip to London in 2011, George shared his feelings with The Sun: “I’ve always known I was meant to be a boy.”

The twins both graduated from the Hiram G Andrews Center and worked at Reading Hospital, cultivating separate interests along the way. George pursued a career in music as a country singer, and Lori became an accomplished tenpin bowler. From the age of 24, they lived independently, moving from an institution to a two-bedroom apartment, where they each had their own room.

Embracing Their Unique Connection

Despite suggestions over the years, Lori and George never considered being separated. George firmly believed in their way of life, famously stating in a 1997 documentary, “My theory is: why fix what is not broken?” Lori echoed this sentiment in 2002 with a straightforward, “I don’t believe in separation.”

As we remember Lori and George, their incredible story continues to inspire and resonate. Our thoughts are with their family and friends during this time of loss.
