Spice Tins: Why Size Matters

Did you know that the size of a spice tin can make a big difference? Several well-known spice brands, including McCormick & Co., are facing lawsuits over the size of their ground pepper tins.

The Allegation

Watkins Inc., a smaller company in the spice market, claims that McCormick reduced the amount of pepper in their tins by 25% without changing the tin size. This means you’re getting less pepper even though the tins look the same.

The Issue of Fairness and Transparency

Why is this a big deal? It’s all about fairness and transparency. Watkins argues that McCormick is tricking customers into thinking they are getting more pepper than they actually are. Because McCormick’s tins are opaque, it’s hard to see how much product is inside. In contrast, Watkins uses smaller tins but includes the same amount of pepper as McCormick’s.

Misleading Packaging

Watkins says McCormick is misleading customers to gain an unfair advantage over competitors. They claim McCormick is using deceptive packaging to make their product appear better, not to actually improve it. While McCormick lists the amount of pepper (6 oz.) accurately, the font size is small and easy to miss at first glance.

The Practice of Slack-Filling

This tactic, known as “slack-filling,” is considered dishonest and breaches consumer protection laws. By not fully filling their tins, McCormick isn’t giving customers the full amount of pepper they expect. This affects not only value for money but also makes it hard for customers to compare products accurately.

Be a Smart Shopper

Next time you’re buying spices at the grocery store, pay close attention to the packaging. Don’t let the size of the tin fool you—what’s inside is what really counts!
