A dining establishment had to reimburse 4,000 patrons after two young men recorded themselves urinating into a hotpot soup. When dining out, customers expect to enjoy their food peacefully. Good sanitation, excellent food quality, and courtesy from fellow diners are typically considered essential. But what occurs when two customers do something unacceptable, and no one discovers it until a video spreads online?

This unfortunate situation happened in a private area at a Shanghai location of China's largest hotpot chain last month. The widely-shared footage shows two 17-year-old boys standing on the table and urinating into hotpot broth. The incident took place at Haidilao, which has now promised compensation to 4,000 customers after public outrage reached extreme levels.

Typically, the Haidilao packaged spicy broth contains Soybean Oil, Chilli, Bean sauce (soy, sugar, water), salt, Chinese prickly ash, pickled pepper, pickled ginger, sugar, garlic, spices, onion, and fermented black bean. Unfortunately, urine became an unwanted addition, meaning cleanliness standards were compromised due to insufficient "staff training."

The food chain has apologized, stating they replaced all hotpots and eating utensils after discussing the incident once the video gained attention. They posted on social media: "In the early hours of February 24, two men urinated into a hotpot after dining in a private room at a Haidilao branch on the Bund in Shanghai."

"As management had never created emergency plans or provided training for handling this type of incident, employees at our branch could not detect any problems or maintain the safety of the dining environment."

They added: "We completely understand that the upset caused to our customers by this event cannot be fully made up for by any means, but we will do our best to take responsibility."

This has resulted in Haidilao's owners providing cash refunds to all patrons who ate at the branch between February 24 and March 8. Every customer will receive a full refund plus additional cash compensation totaling 10 times what they paid for their meals.

According to Shanghai police, the teenage offenders were reportedly intoxicated and have been arrested for their actions. After the incident, it remains unknown whether the hotpot was sanitized after being contaminated.

The police in Shanghai have arrested two youths for reportedly urinating into a hotpot at a location of the well-known restaurant Haidilao, authorities announced on Saturday. In the video footage, the individual also chuckled while mentioning that Haidilao, a popular Chinese hotpot chain, had introduced a new feature.

If the hotpot was not properly cleaned afterward, it could create potential health dangers for anyone who consumes urine. Urine contains bodily waste substances filtered through the kidneys. Although Urophagia (the practice of drinking urine) has existed for many centuries and was utilized in numerous ancient societies for various wellness, therapeutic, and beauty purposes, it is not a commonly accepted practice today.

Urine has significant sodium levels, which increases thirst and may cause dehydration.
