China has boosted its counter tariffs on US imports by a tremendous amount as President Xi Jinping sent a powerful warning to Donald Trump. The economic clash between China and the US has grown more severe in recent days, with President Donald Trump imposing up to 104 percent tax on Chinese products that began Wednesday (April 9), prompting Xi to respond with an extra 84 percent tariff increase.

The 84 percent rate has now jumped to 125 percent in the newest economic strike carried out on the global stage, and the confrontation between the two countries appears unlikely to ease soon.

This development follows Trump's decision to lift tariffs on Chinese imports to as high as 145 percent on the same day he suspended tariffs for 90 days for most countries - including an island where only penguins and seals live.

The Chinese State Council Tariff Commission released this statement: "On April 10, 2025, the US government announced that the 'reciprocal tariff' on Chinese goods exported to the US would be further increased to 125%."

The US's imposition of abnormally high tariffs on China seriously violates international economic and trade rules, basic economic laws and common sense, and is completely a unilateral bullying and coercion.

In accordance with the Tariff Law of the People's Republic of China, the Customs Law of the People's Republic of China, the Foreign Trade Law of the People's Republic of China and other laws and regulations and the basic principles of international law, and with the approval of the State Council, starting from April 12, 2025, the tariff increase measures on imported goods originating from the United States will be adjusted.

  1. Adjust the tariff rate stipulated in the 'Announcement of the State Council Tariff Commission on Adjusting the Tariff Measures on Imports Originating in the United States' (Tax Commission Announcement No. 5 of 2025) from 84% to 125%. Given that at the current tariff level, there is no market acceptance for US goods exported to China. If the US continues to impose tariffs on Chinese goods exported to the US, China will ignore it."

The 'trade war' began when Trump signed an executive order which accused China of enabling unauthorized migration and narcotics into the US.

  1. Other matters shall be carried out according to the 'Announcement of the Tariff Commission of the State Council on the Imposition of Additional Tariffs on Imported Goods Originating in the United States' (Tax Commission Announcement No. 4 of 2025)."

Shortly after returning to the White House, Trump targeted China, Mexico and Canada, blaming them for allowing illegal immigration and drugs to enter the States.

A 10 percent tax was applied to all Chinese products entering the US on February 4. This action prompted China to retaliate, implementing 15 percent tariffs on coal and liquefied natural gas plus a 10 percent fee on crude oil, agricultural machinery and large-engine vehicles from the US starting February 10.

The nations have persisted relentlessly to reach today's tariff levels; China now maintains a 125 percent tax on American products, while the US is charging Chinese imports up to 145 percent.
