China has responded to the US with extra tariffs following Donald Trump's announcement of new charges on what he called 'Liberation Day' in America. China was among many nations hit with fresh tariffs when Trump revealed his plans on April 2, continuing his effort to strengthen his nation's economy.

During his speech from the White House Rose Garden, the President stated: "This is Liberation Day. We've been waiting a long time. April 2, 2025, will forever be remembered as the day American industry was reborn, the day America's destiny was reclaimed, and the day that we began to 'Make America Wealthy Again'. For decades our country has been looted, pillaged, raped and plundered from nations, near and far, from both friend and foe alike."

Many global regions received a 'baseline' tariff of 10 percent on all US imports, but Trump also announced reciprocal tariffs on numerous 'worst offenders', set to start on April 9. "They do it to us, and we do it to them. Doesn't get much simpler than that," Trump said.

China faced some of the harshest measures as Trump declared tariffs of 54 percent against the country, including previous duties. Now, China has announced its counter-action. Beginning April 10, China will add a 34 percent tariff on US goods.

The announcement came as China's finance ministry claims US tariffs on Chinese items do not follow international trade rules. A spokesperson from the ministry of commerce said China has also filed a case with the World Trade Organization (WTO), claiming that Trump's tariffs "seriously violates WTO rules."

The spokesperson said the tariff also "damages the legitimate rights and interests of WTO members, and undermines the rules-based multilateral trading system and the international economic and trade order. It is a typical unilateral bullying practice that endangers the stability of the global economic and trade order. China firmly opposes this."

Beyond tariffs, Beijing's commerce ministry stated it would implement additional export controls on rare earths, materials used in high-tech products like computer chips and electric vehicle batteries.
