Elon Musk's DOGE uncovers mysterious mine with '22,000 government documents' monitored by 24/7 surveillance
A Pennsylvania limestone cavern, storing numerous federal retirement documents, has garnered Elon Musk's interest. Musk, who leads the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), referred to the cavern as a "time warp" during his February Oval Office visit. "There's a limestone cavern where we keep all the retirement documents...This cavern looks like something from the '50s, because it began in 1955, so it resembles a time warp," he explained.
The underground facility reportedly contains 22,000 filing cabinets and 400 million paper sheets, with 700 staff processing approximately 10,000 retirement requests monthly.
After sharing cavern images online, Musk noted: "Since all retirement paperwork is manual, it's calculated by hand. The details are written on paper, then sent to a cavern and, like, 'What do you mean a cavern?' Yes, there's a limestone cavern. We store all retirement documents there. Look at this picture, we'll show some images later."
"We heard the maximum number of possible retirees per month is 10,000 because retirement paperwork is handwritten, then transported to a cavern. Instead of working in a mine tunnel carrying folders to boxes in a cavern, people could do almost anything else that would better contribute to United States goods and services."
Iron Mountain operates this facility, and their stock prices reportedly changed after Musk's remarks. However, CEO Bill Meaney views this as a "growth opportunity" stating: "We see this as a continued company prospect."
The government-leased cavern is considered secure with constant security, cameras, armed checkpoints and metal detectors. The limestone structure resists fire, experiences few temperature changes underground, and eliminates the need for costly cooling systems.
Regarding retirement benefits, Musk stated DOGE won't reduce Social Security payments. "No, our work will actually help their benefits," he told Fox News recently. "Because of DOGE's efforts, genuine recipients will get more Social Security, not less. I want to stress this point. Due to DOGE's work, legitimate Social Security recipients will receive more money, not less. Let the record show I said this and it will prove true. We can verify this in the future."
