WWE legend John Cena has shared what assisted 'guiding' him after being previously identified with and treated for skin cancer. The 47-year-old entertainer and grappler, who will headline WrestleMania against Cody Rhodes, disclosed he was previously diagnosed with and treated for skin cancer in a fresh campaign to endorse sunscreen use with Neutrogena. Cena explained to PEOPLE that during his childhood he 'never' applied sunscreen, pointing out that since he was 'born in '77', skin protection 'was somewhat unfamiliar information'. As he matured, he relocated to Florida and confessed he 'disregarded' his skin, finding himself under the sun but 'stubbornly' avoiding sunscreen.

"I refused to establish a routine and also believed the issue would never affect me. It's one of those situations where I had extensive exposure with minimal protection and it eventually caught up with me," he stated.

A visit to a dermatologist for a skin examination later uncovered 'a cancerous area' on his 'right pec'. Fortunately, the spot was removable and Cena notes his 'excellent' dermatologist 'guided him and assured him he wasn't alone', which assisted him in understanding the 'overwhelming' statistics related to the disease.

Cena adds while he did 'become informed about' the statistics, he thinks 'the most effective way to stress a point is through person-to-person interaction'.

He now discusses his two experiences to encourage others to seek medical attention if they notice anything suspicious and to take sun protection more seriously.

"As a person I can tell you: Man, that phone call is not what you want to receive because it is unpredictable and you don't know the severity," he stated.

Cena needed another spot removed approximately one year later and he admits it's challenging to prevent his thoughts from jumping to 'the worst-case scenario'. But with his dermatologist 'guiding' him through it and deciding to take sun protection more seriously, he's now in a 'good position'.

He concluded: "I'm very thankful to have avoided those two bullets, but I carry them as a reminder of, 'hey man, you need to spend those extra few seconds protecting yourself daily."

Cena has been visiting Europe and the United Kingdom recently with the WWE before his final WrestleMania appearance against current WWE champion, Cody Rhodes. Having turned 'heel' for the first time in his career (wrestling term for villain), he has created waves through the professional wrestling industry as he aims to win a historic 17th title before retiring at the year's end. He will stay with the WWE but as an ambassador and non-wrestling talent, concentrating on his acting career.
