President Trump is reportedly "satisfied" with Musk's budget-reduction initiatives, but anticipates him "withdrawing in the upcoming weeks." Musk previously informed Fox News host Brett Baier he believed he could eliminate $1 trillion from the federal budget within 130 days, which would conclude around late May.

His position as a "special government employee" restricts him to 130 federal work days annually, making Musk's White House tenure inherently limited. His Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) is scheduled to conclude on July 4, 2026, unless extended.

Politico states Trump has discussed Musk's departure. They claim the President has told cabinet members that Musk will reduce his involvement soon to focus on his companies. According to "three Trump insiders," Musk might retain a supporting function but won't remain a constant presence.

The Trump-Musk partnership seemingly isn't ending completely. On March 31, Trump stated, "eventually, Elon will want to return to his company," adding he would "keep him as long as possible."

A White House representative stated on April 1: "This White House would like to retain Elon for as long as feasible. Elon has been crucial in implementing the President's agenda, and will maintain this valuable work until the President indicates otherwise."

Musk supported Republican candidate Brad Schimel in a recent Wisconsin Supreme Court election, contributing financially and distributing million-dollar checks to two voters while wearing a cheese-shaped hat. Though Musk called the vote essential for "civilization's future," after losing he claimed he "anticipated defeat" and was "sacrificing a piece for positional advantage."

His Trump administration connection has alienated some potential customers. Tesla sales have decreased globally, prompting Trump to stage an unusual White House lawn demonstration attacking the "radical left" while announcing his Tesla purchase.
