Trump has brutal response after China announces 34% retaliation tariff on US goods
Donald Trump quickly fired back after China revealed plans to place 34 percent tariffs on all US goods starting April 10. The Chinese announcement on April 4 followed Trump's declaration of tariffs against many nations during what he called "Liberation Day" on April 2. The president had imposed 54 percent tariffs on all Chinese imports to the US, prompting China to express strong opposition to this action.
China stated it would "take countermeasures to protect its own rights and interests," resulting in today's 34 percent tariff announcement. Besides the new US tariff, Beijing's commerce ministry also disclosed plans for additional export controls on rare earth materials used in technology products like computer chips and electric vehicle batteries.
China filed a lawsuit with the World Trade Organization (WTO) regarding the tariffs, arguing they "break WTO rules." The Chinese commerce ministry stated: "The United States' so-called 'reciprocal tariffs' seriously violate WTO rules, harm the legitimate rights of WTO members, and undermine the rules-based multilateral trading system and international economic order. It is clear bullying that threatens global economic stability. China strongly opposes this."
Following China's response, Trump went to Truth Social to share his thoughts. "CHINA PLAYED IT WRONG," Trump stated, adding: "THEY PANICKED - THE ONE THING THEY CANNOT AFFORD TO DO!"
The tariffs China confirmed today come after earlier announcements of a 15 percent tariff on US coal and liquefied natural gas imports, plus a 10 percent tariff on crude oil, agricultural machinery, and large-engine vehicles.
Trump's reaction to China's latest tariff announcement followed several other posts where he insisted his economic measures for the US, including a $5 million "Gold Card," are proceeding as planned. "TO THE MANY INVESTORS COMING INTO THE UNITED STATES AND INVESTING MASSIVE AMOUNTS OF MONEY, MY POLICIES WILL NEVER CHANGE. THIS IS A GREAT TIME TO GET RICH, RICHER THAN EVER BEFORE!!!" he wrote in one post today. In another, he added: "GREAT JOB NUMBERS, FAR BETTER THAN EXPECTED. IT'S ALREADY WORKING. HANG TOUGH, WE CAN'T LOSE!!!"
